Attachmate Mainframe Integration Connectivity Control Ships With Premiere of BEA WebLogic Workshop 8.1

New Integrated Control Gives Developers Easy-To-Use Tools That Integrate Legacy Assets With New Applications

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Aug. 19, 2003 —Attachmate Corporation, with more than 20 years of innovation in the legacy application integration space, announced its position as the first mainframe integration tool bundled and distributed with BEA WebLogic Workshop™ 8.1 from BEA Systems (Nasdaq: BEAS). Via a new, integrated control, Attachmate myEXTRA!™ Smart Connector Enterprise Edition can capture legacy data and business logic as callable services for use in new applications developed in BEA WebLogic Platform™ 8.1. BEA and Attachmate worked together to develop the Mainframe Integration Control so that developers can drag and drop transactions from legacy applications right from the WebLogic Workshop environment.

“Attachmate complements BEA WebLogic Workshop, the industry’s first unified development environment for the rapid development and integration of J2EE and service-oriented applications, by extending the application developer’s reach to legacy host assets with their new, integrated Mainframe Integration Control,” said Byron Sebastian, vice president and general manager, WebLogic Portal and WebLogic Workshop, BEA Systems, Inc. “Together, Attachmate and BEA can make integrating legacy data and business logic with new application development easier than ever – delivering increased productivity, faster time-to-value and lower cost of ownership-- adding up to a stronger competitive advantage.”

Attachmate’s Integrated Control
The Attachmate Mainframe Integration Control displays as a control in the WebLogic Workshop Data Palette pane, and is designed to allow developers to drag and drop legacy transactions to WebLogic Workshop’s main development area, integrating with the graphical workflow user interface. The Attachmate Mainframe Integration Control can process requests from the Workshop application once it has been deployed to BEA WebLogic Server™, and uses the Smart Connector's JCA Resource Adapter to execute operations against the legacy host system. A dedicated Website at www.attachmate.com/WLW can supply developers with sample tasks, tools, and information to get a feel for Attachmate’s Mainframe Integration Control.

“Organizations should look for strong partnership solutions that provide the best functionality in the market for legacy access and integration,” said Yefim V. Natis, vice president and research director of Gartner Inc.
“Working with BEA, Attachmate gives developers a simpler way to integrate legacy assets within a service-oriented architecture,” explained Markus Nitschke, Attachmate VP, Marketing. “Attachmate brings comprehensive legacy application access to the BEA WebLogic Platform. With the ability to choose from host-based to non-host based components, customers can directly integrate their critical legacy information when building enterprise-class applications.” More information can be found on the BEA dev2dev Web site.
