BEA Partners Showcase 'Controls' for BEA WebLogic Workshop to Simplify and Accelerate J2EE Development

Leading Software Vendors Line Up in Support with Service-Oriented Building Blocks for the BEA WebLogic Enterprise Platform

SAN FRANCISCO, JAVAONE 2003, June 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - BEA Systems, Inc., the world's leading application infrastructure software company, today announced in the BEA JavaOne booth #1331, leading independent software vendors (ISVs) are scheduled to showcase support for BEA WebLogic Workshop(TM), the market's first unified development environment that simplifies and converges the development and integration of J2EE and service-oriented applications. ISVs such as Attachmate, Blue Titan, Confluent Software, Cyclone Commerce, Documentum, Informatica, salesforce.com and Yahoo! Enterprise Solutions plan to offer Java Controls for BEA WebLogic Workshop designed to help BEA increase IT department productivity by reducing the time and cost required for application development and integration.

Through continued innovation and an expanded portfolio of Java Controls, which are reusable service-oriented components that allow developers to connect to and use any IT system or application, BEA has extended its lead over competitors to make Java development easier for all types of developers - not just J2EE experts. With such a broad range of partners contributing controls, developers gain access to a diverse set of IT capabilities such as data mining and content management. Through these third-party controls, developers are exposed to complementary ISV solutions that can enhance their skills, while providing a wider audience for BEA's partners. Moreover, ISVs in support of BEA WebLogic Workshop with pre-built controls represents another significant step in the larger process of gaining industry backing for the entire BEA WebLogic Enterprise Platform(TM).

At JavaOne, Attachmate will demo its Smart Connectors integration with WebLogic Workshop in Attachmate's booth #1437.

"Providing the bridge between legacy business processes and new applications is the hallmark of Attachmate myEXTRA! Smart Connectors," said Markus Nitschke, vice president of marketing at Attachmate. "Our products overcome the barriers of interacting with the host environment so developers can leverage their BEA skill sets and quickly integrate legacy assets into the highly functional BEA WebLogic Enterprise Platform infrastructure. Working with BEA, our customers can cost-effectively optimize the management of supply and demand-side business processes."

In addition, Confluent Software, which will also be showcasing at JavaOne, provides controls to build the security and management functionality required for Web services during the early development phase, reducing the associated cost and complexity for developers.

"We are pleased to be working with BEA to further empower application developers to automatically add enterprise-class management capabilities with no additional coding required," said Alain Couder, president and CEO of Confluent Software Inc. "With Confluent and BEA, our customers now gain command-and-control throughout the application lifecycle, starting with development through deployment. The benefit to the customer is that development cost can be reduced up to 50 percent, and maintenance cost can be reduced up to 20 percent."

Similarly, salesforce.com plans to offer Java controls for customers building new applications that access sforce, SalesForce.com's new client/service application development system. "Our alliance with BEA, and specifically our joint work on WebLogic Workshop controls, will make it dramatically easier for our customers to extend and integrate sforce when building enterprise-class client/service applications on the BEA WebLogic Platform," said Marc Benioff, chairman & CEO of salesforce.com. "Using our sforce platform, coupled with BEA's world-class tools, BEA and salesforce.com are leading the industry in making rapid, service-oriented development accessible to everyone."

By providing developers with easy-to-use building blocks that encapsulate complex J2EE details in connecting and using systems, logic, services, and business processes, BEA WebLogic Workshop controls simplify application development and business process assembly. Controls provide a consistent service-oriented approach to integrating enterprise resources, such as databases, applications and external Web services. Because controls can be reused in future projects, software developers can share development best practices; and because controls abstract J2EE "plumbing" code, they too can be shared among integration specialists and business analysts. Moreover, creating a catalog of reusable controls to jump-start integration and development projects, can then further help improve return on software investments, reduce development costs and speed time-to-market.

"With innovations like controls in BEA WebLogic Workshop, we are helping bring order-of-magnitude productivity gains to the marketplace," said Olivier Helleboid, executive vice president, products, BEA Systems. "Our partners have recognized BEA as a leader in the Java-based platform market for enterprise development and business integration. They are working hard to support BEA, and we are grateful for their endorsement."

Workshop Controls are a key element in fulfilling BEA's goal of increasing resources for the greater development community. BEA has established an extensive partner "ecosystem" in order to provide customers with the IT elements they need to complement BEA's development and deployment platform. From hardware and operating system vendors, to portlet providers and custom integration solutions for vertical markets, to the big five systems integrators, BEA focuses on helping ensure that its customers can easily plug additional IT resources into the BEA application infrastructure. As a result, customers can then turn their focus on building, extending and integrating new custom applications that produce competitive advantage rather than worrying about making sure legacy applications keep working.
