Alphen a/d Rijn/ The Netherlands – September 20, 2010 – Attachmate, a leading manufacturer of software solutions for terminal emulation, legacy modernization systems, and managed file transfer today released the results of a recent Europe-wide survey on Managed File Transfer (MFT) solutions. In this survey, 610 IT professionals from a variety of different companies and industries across Europe shared information on how they transfer data across their corporation. The survey reveals that the vast majority of companies do not have an overarching data transfer strategy. Security protocols are often insufficient or are only sporadically complied with — all of which can lead to breaches in data security.
The survey indicated that numerous companies use FTP or other traditional data transfer systems to exchange data both inside and outside the organization. Unfortunately, this method does not always meet security requirements. According to the results of the study many companies are aware of this fact, since over 50 percent of those surveyed stated that security is the greatest challenge posed by data transfer.
Furthermore, the survey shows that 77 percent of these European companies surveyed transfer business critical data both inside and outside the company. This high percentage makes the requirement for having uniform strategies for data transfer and the implementation of security protocols imperative. At the same time, almost 64 percent indicate that their companies do not currently have a uniform approach in place for data transfer and that the requirements for today’s corporate landscape are thus not being met.
The MFT skill set of employees is also a cause for concern. Although 31 percent of these corporations consistently transfer business critical data, at least 17 percent of the employees involved do not know who in their company is responsible for data transfer security. As such, if an error occurs during data transfer they do not know who to contact to address the issue. Furthermore, it is unsettling that 23 percent of those questioned did not know how to encrypt or decrypt data, notify recipients, or how to implement anti-virus procedures after the data transfer.
