Managing Mainframe Integration in
a Sluggish Economy

Economic uncertainty has resulted in tightened budgets for IT organizations, but businesses must continue to innovate and stay competitive. When it comes to mainframe application integration, this set of circumstances calls for a cost-effective solution that can deliver quick, foolproof results.

If your organization is tackling mainframe integration, you've no doubt come to terms with two realities:

  1. Business-critical data and logic are locked up tight in those systems.
  2. The mainframe-proficient workforce is drastically shrinking.

The challenge: find a way to unlock and extend mainframe assets to newer technologies, without burning out your IT staff.

Evaluating solutions
Mainframe integration can be done in a number of ways. One available approach is rehosting, but let the buyer beware: migrating applications from one host to another can be dangerous. Besides, this method solves the hardware issue without solving the software issue.

Rewriting mainframe application code is another approach, but it is fraught with potential pitfalls. Worst-case scenarios include a failed purchasing or accounting system.

You can also rebuild your systems from the ground up. But remember that this time-consuming approach might unduly burden younger programmers or depend heavily on the skill sets of older programmers whose expertise you cannot count on forever.

Given that the above approaches are too risky, too impractical, or too expensive, how can you move forward? An advanced technology from Attachmate can actually SOA-enable your mainframe assets without rehosting, rewriting, or rebuilding.

Low Investment/Rapid Return
Attachmate® Verastream® encapsulates mainframe data and logic via the screen interface to enable flawless and economical participation in SOA. With Verastream, you get rapid ROI because you can use existing development resources, familiar IT tools, and proven mainframe investments.

Through its use of industry standards such as web services, J2EE, and .NET, Verastream automatically generates services for reuse in new applications and business processes. Whether your environment is IBM System z, IBM System i, UNIX, OpenVMS, or HP e3000, Verastream can modernize your host assets without disturbing mainframe-application code or daily business operations.

That's why Verastream is the solution to help you succeed in this era of economic uncertainty, when IT project costs and ROI are under intense scrutiny. It's the most cost-effective way to introduce new applications that leverage your existing IT infrastructure.
