The City of Fremont is a thriving Silicon Valley community of more than 200,000 and is known as one of America's most liveable cities. But Fremont police were hampered uploading reports from their PCs to a host computer that is, until WRQ Consulting Services provided a transparent, automated solution.
Business Challenge
Maintaining accurate police records is essential to the criminal justice system and to public safety itself. But, as important as those records are, no municipality wants its police officers burdened by the reporting process itself. The City of Fremont needed to find a way to streamline its process.
Technical Challenge
The City of Fremont wanted an automated way for police officers to remotely log on to their Compaq Alpha computer and transfer daily reports from their PC to specific directories on the Alpha. But, incompatibilities in file-naming conventions made that process difficult. The IT department had addressed the problem by developing a C++ script that automatically prepended a numerical prefix to a file, indicating the year the report was initiated. However, that solution worked only for reports filed in 1999.
Consulting Services Solution
The scripting developed by the consultant from WRQ Consulting Services completely automated the file conversions and transfers. The scripting also solved the date problem, allowing officers to upload reports prior to 1999 (supplemental reports are often added to existing ones), as well as those for 2000 and beyond. Now, uploading reports is fast and transparent to the police officers, who can concentrate on what they do best-keeping Fremont a peaceful community.
